What should I consider when choosing birth control?2019-07-12T11:56:51+00:00

There are many factors a woman needs to consider when choosing the right form of birth control. Most importantly, she needs to determine what type best suits her needs and lifestyle. For example, she might want to consider the statistics on how well each form of birth control prevents pregnancy or how easy it is to use. While birth control pills are a popular form of contraception, some women aren’t able to take a pill at the same time every day, which can affect the pill’s effectiveness. Women may also want to consider whether or not her preferred form of birth control prevents the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. Also, a woman’s age and health may affect her decision and her doctor’s advice on what may be the best choice.

What are long-acting reversible contraceptives?2019-07-12T11:57:23+00:00

Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) are forms of birth control that are effective for long periods of time with little effort from the patient that don’t have long-term effects on her ability to have children. The 2 most common forms of LARC are the IUD (intrauterine device) and the implant, which is often referred to by its brand name, Nexplanon®. The IUD is a small T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus. IUDs are either copper or they slowly release hormones similar to those found in birth control pills. The copper IUD is effective for up to 10 years and has no lasting effects on a woman’s fertility. The hormone IUD can be left in place for 3 or 5 years depending on the specific type. Nexplanon is a match-sized and shaped device that is inserted under the skin on a woman’s inner bicep. This device slowly releases hormones that prevent pregnancy for 3 years.

What should I choose if I need to protect myself from sexually transmitted diseases?2019-07-12T11:57:56+00:00

Barrier methods of birth control, such as condoms, are the only forms of contraception that prevent the spread of STDs. Condoms are effective when used correctly. However, due to human error condoms may tear, slip off, or otherwise not function properly. Women who are sexually active may want to consider an additional form of birth control to more fully protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies. The doctors at UroGyn Specialists of Florida can offer advice on the different birth control options available and which form might be best for each individual patient.
