TThe different methods of contraception have varying rates of effectiveness:
- Intrauterine devices – nearly 100% effective
- Sterilization – nearly 100% effective
- Hormones (pills, injection, pellets, ring, or patch) – 91-94%
- Diaphragm – 88%
- Male condoms – 82%
- Female condoms – 79%
- Sponge – 76-88%
The biggest risk associated with the diaphragm, condoms, and sponge is whether or not you use it every time and use it correctly. There are other issues to consider with each method besides effectiveness:

Finally, it’s good to talk about preconception planning when you visit us for birth control, because it makes you aware that being able to get pregnant diminishes with age. Referrals are needed for the following insurances:
- HMO’s
- Tricare
- FHHS Rosen (every six months)
- Wellcare (yearly)
UroGyn Specialists of Florida accepts most major insurance plans. Please remember to bring your insurance card(s) with you on the day of your appointment. Contact your primary care physician to obtain a referral from your insurance carrier, if it is required by your insurance. If this referral is not obtained by the time of your visit, you will be rescheduled. Additionally, under the rules of all HMO and PPO policies, patients will be responsible for paying their co-payment at the time of the appointment.
