What factors should you consider when choosing birth control?2019-07-12T12:06:09+00:00

There’s a lot of information to sort through and a variety of personal factors to think about when choosing a method of contraception. One of the most important variables to consider is effectiveness.
TThe different methods of contraception have varying rates of effectiveness:

  • Intrauterine devices – nearly 100% effective
  • Sterilization – nearly 100% effective
  • Hormones (pills, injection, pellets, ring, or patch) – 91-94%
  • Diaphragm – 88%
  • Male condoms – 82%
  • Female condoms – 79%
  • Sponge – 76-88%

The biggest risk associated with the diaphragm, condoms, and sponge is whether or not you use it every time and use it correctly. There are other issues to consider with each method besides effectiveness:

  • Whether it’s permanent or reversible
  • Whether or not it prevents sexually transmitted diseases
  • Health risks
  • Side effects
  • Partner involvement
  • Cost

What is preconception counseling?2019-07-12T12:07:54+00:00

Birth control is the key to family planning, but there’s more to planning for a healthy baby than simply using contraception. It’s important to think about when you’ll have a baby, then to get preconception counseling before you try to get pregnant.
Preconception counseling identifies any health conditions you have or lifestyle concerns that might make it hard to have a healthy pregnancy and baby. It gives you the chance to learn about nutrients you need to take before getting pregnant to help avoid birth defects.
Finally, it’s good to talk about preconception planning when you visit us for birth control, because it makes you aware that being able to get pregnant diminishes with age. After the age of 30, you’re half as fertile as when you were in your 20s. If you’re approaching the age of 35 and you want to have a family, it’s time to come up with a plan.
