Endometriosis is a female reproductive system condition in which the uterine lining begins growing outside of its usual area. This growth can happen virtually anywhere in the body but is most commonly
confined to the other parts of the reproductive organs. For example, it is quite common to see endometriosis on the ovaries.

Endometriosis is primarily seen in women who are within their reproductive years. This period is defined as that of initial menstruation until the start of menopause. There appears to be a family link to the development of endometriosis in some cases. A woman whose mother suffered from endometriosis has a higher risk of having it as well.

Some women may have no obvious signs at all, even if they have severe endometriosis. However, many women who have endometriosis have very severe symptoms including intense pain during menstrual periods, pain during ovulation, and in some cases, pain during sex. Women who are unable to conceive a baby may find that endometriosis is the reason.

The urogynecologist will often form a preliminary diagnosis of endometriosis with the help of the patient. The more detailed that patients can be about their symptoms, the timing of their symptoms, and their other medical conditions, the easier it will be for the doctor to form this preliminary diagnosis. To definitively diagnose endometriosis, a laparoscopic surgery is needed. This surgery allows the doctor to get a close-up inner view of the uterus and the other female organs so that the level and placement of endometrial tissue can be determined.

While there is no cure for endometriosis, there are many ways to achieve symptom relief. Some medications may be useful for short-term pain relief. The doctor can prescribe hormone therapy for long-term relief. A surgical procedure can remove some of the excess endometrial tissue if hormone therapy does not have the desired results.
