Ovarian cysts are tiny fluid-filled sacs that are found in the ovaries. The cysts are sometimes found on the outside of the ovary, although that is less common than cysts growing inside the ovaries.
In the majority of situations, ovarian cysts are not dangerous. There are few cases of malignant cysts that are cancerous. Even though the risk of cancerous cysts is low, it is always best to have an experienced urogynecologist examine the cysts.
In many cases, a woman will be completely unaware that she has ovarian cysts until they are discovered by a doctor. There are some cases in which the cysts cause very clear symptoms, however. Pelvic pain, lower abdominal pain, pain during sex, unusually painful periods, and bleeding when not menstruating are all common indicators that ovarian cysts may be present. Some people also have unexplained weight gain. Symptoms can vary considerably, depending on the patient, so it is always best to discuss any possible symptoms in detail with the doctor so that the problem can be determined.
There are a couple of common types of non-cancerous ovarian cysts. Follicle cysts develop when follicles don’t release eggs. A follicle cyst often goes away naturally within a couple of months. A corpus luteum cyst happens if the egg sac never returns to its original size after releasing the egg. The sac seals off, retaining the fluid inside. This can result in a large cyst. As with follicle cysts, corpus luteum cysts often go away on their own. The cysts that cause endometriosis are not as common as follicle cysts or luteum cysts, and they must be removed surgically. Most ovarian cysts don’t require removal and will go away on their own.

UroGyn Specialists of Florida accepts most major insurance plans. Please remember to bring your insurance card(s) with you on the day of your appointment. Contact your primary care physician to obtain a referral from your insurance carrier, if it is required by your insurance. If this referral is not obtained by the time of your visit, you will be rescheduled. Additionally, under the rules of all HMO and PPO policies, patients will be responsible for paying their co-payment at the time of the appointment.
