A bladder infection can be very painful and it should never be ignored. Orlando, Lake Mary, and Kissimmee residents in Florida can turn to UroGyn Specialists of Florida for treatment that will resolve the pain and heal the infection.
A bladder infection is a type of inflammation of the bladder. This infection is most commonly bacterial and is more common in females’ vs males. In fact, over 50 percent of women have a bladder infection at least once in their life.
While it is not completely certain why women suffer from bladder infections, the answer may lie within the urethra. Women have a short urethra, generally just about 1.5 inches in length. This relatively short length may be the reason that bacteria enter the bladder and then cause an infection.
Blood in the urine, cloudy looking urine, increased frequency of urination, urine that has an odor, pain when urinating, a burning sensation when urinating, the feeling of having to urinate constantly, and painful cramps in the lower back or abdomen are all common signs of a bladder infection.
Women are the highest risk group, but there are also some additional risk factors that apply to both sexes. Seniors, especially those who are immobile, suffer from bladder infections more often than others. Lack of proper fluid intake, use of a urinary catheter, bowel incontinence, pregnancy, and diabetes are all additional risk factors for bladder infections. People with any type of urinary blockage or urinary tract problem are more likely to develop bladder infections.
Seeing an experienced Urogynecologist, a doctor who has expertise in both gynecology and the female urinary tract, is very important for people who suffer from bladder infections. The treatment often starts with finding the “root cause” of the condition followed by the prescription of medications such as oral antibiotics. The antibiotics are typically the best way to kill the bacteria that has invaded the bladder. Patients who have pain or burning may also need other medications that address those symptoms. It is of paramount importance to perform objective testing such as urine cultures before rushing to the treatment phase of management.
